Use Magic Device Printable version

Overview

A successful use magic device check allows a character to use a magic item as if your character had the required class, race, or alignment.

On the Dragon's Neck we have modified the DC for using a scroll. The following page lists changes from vanilla. For any information that has not been changed please reference Use Magic Device on the NWN Wiki.
  • Check: The base difficulty class (DC) of this task is determined by the value of the item, and modified by the type of emulation the character is attempting. If the character attempts to emulate a specific race, the DC increases by 5; if he attempts to emulate a specific alignment, the DC increases by 10. Emulating a specific class does not modify the base DC. You must make a DC check of 25 + the level of the spell to cast a spell from a scroll if the difficulty mode of the game is set to Hardcore or higher.

Custom Changes

We have disabled the hardcore or higher rule that requires a DC check of 25 + the level of the spell to use a scroll. This change will make using a scroll be the same as vanilla nwn set to normal or easy difficulty. However we have also modified the class emulation DC from vanilla (listed in the chart below). This means that the ability to use a magic device is based on a flat amount of UMD with modifiers, it no longer requires a roll in order to be successful.

The Race, Alignment, and scroll DC has not been modified. These changes only affect the ability to use scrolls.

DCExample Scroll
4Scroll of Magic Missile (1)
6Scroll of Cat's Grace (3)
8Scroll of Fireball (5)
10Scroll of Confusion (7)
12Scroll of Cloudkill (9)
14Scroll of Acid Fog (11)
16Scroll of Banishment (13)
18Scroll of Blackstaff (15)
20Scroll of Energy Drain (17)
Note: Examples are provided at the minimum caster level for the scroll (a scroll of fireball, caster level 5). If the caster level increases (a scroll of fireball, caster level 10) so will the DC. Scrolls created by players are always at the minimum caster level.
