Use Magic Device Printable version

Overview

A successful use magic device check allows a character to use a magic item as if your character had the required class, race, alignment or spell-casting class level.

On TDN we have modified the Use Magic Device skill when using it to cast a spell from a wand or scroll. For information about aspects of the skill that have not been changed, please reference Use Magic Device on the NWN Wiki.

The following part pertaining to overcoming class, race and alignment restrictions on items is unchanged from vanilla NWN:
  • Check: The base difficulty class (DC) of this task is determined by the value of the item, and modified by the type of emulation the character is attempting. If the character attempts to emulate a specific race, the DC increases by 5; if he attempts to emulate a specific alignment, the DC increases by 10. Emulating a specific class does not modify the base DC.

All parts of the skill pertaining to using wands and scrolls have been customized on TDN, and use the flat DCs specified below. There is no roll involved; the user's Use Magic Device bonus must simply match or exceed the DC.

Additionally, TDN also adds a spell-casting class level requirement to using wands or scrolls, even if the spell contained in the wand or scroll is one that is on the spell list of one of the user's casting classes. More details on this can be found on the page for wand and scroll crafting. This requirement can also be overcome through the Use Magic Device skill, with the DC being the same as the one used if the spell is not on the user's spell list.

Note: Examples are provided at the minimum caster level for the spell's innate spell level (eg. a wand/scroll of fireball, caster level 5). If the caster level increases (a wand/scroll of fireball, caster level 10), so will the DC. Wands/scrolls created by players are always at the minimum caster level.
