Prison

Greetings from the Lower Boroughs,

I'm unsure what direction we're going with the narrative, given what happens to the city in a year or so, but all the same, I'd like to suggest the addition of a proper prison facility, complete with a yard, to make more exciting roleplay opportunities on the server. At the moment, getting arrested often feels like a brief, isolated event, which, to my understanding, means you just stay logged off or AFK in a cell until however many days have passed. Whereas a dedicated prison space could turn it into a meaningful and engaging experience for both offenders and guardsmen.

Impact

A prison with a yard allows for sentences to feel more impactful. Instead of being locked in a cell and forgotten, characters could interact with guards, fellow inmates, and visitors. This creates organic storylines, redemption, rivalries, or even, RARELY, breakouts, all of which add depth to the world.

Community

The yard could serve as a meeting ground for incarcerated characters, fostering alliances or feuds that carry over after release. It also gives guardsmen and order-aligned characters a duty that isn't directly involved with the city, like overseeing labour and preventing contraband smuggling.

Activities

Beyond sitting in a cell, prisoners could be tasked with manual labour, breaking rocks, tending gardens or participating in structured RP events like trials or parole hearings. Guards might have to manage riots, fights or smuggling attempts.

Factions

Factions could vie for influence and use the prison as a recruiting ground. Even neutral parties like priests and/or barristers might visit for rehabilitation or legal work.

Closing Thoughts

A prison isn't just a place to stash offenders. With a yard and proper systems, it could become a vibrant RP hotspot that makes law roleplay, either end of it, feel alive rather than an afterthought.

What do others think? Would this enhance your RP experience? Do you think it'd add to the world, or is this a bad idea?

I love this. When I was a guard, I was always reluctant to jail individuals because it felt like an RP stoppage and would do more harm than good. However, at the same time, I took issue with relying on fines so often, especially with the economy in such a strange place.

+1, before seeing inside the jail it's kinda what we thought it'd be like already so it squashed our dreams a bit when we were jailed and isolated; communal spaces would definitely serve RP better.

I would also love to see visitation alongside all of this (if that’s been brought up already I missed it, I just woke up). Lots of opportunity for crushingly sad interaction between jailed characters and their loved ones.

Expanding the prison system would, I think, be a net positive. More severe offenses (that don’t instantly warrant death like straight-up treason) could see characters jailed more often than killed, which would be an interesting new direction for a character’s story as opposed to an ending.
