Abarran was born in Mosstone in 1309 DR, the son of a druid and an Elmanesse hunter who wandered away before his son's second birthday. As a result, he grew up with limited supervision. While his mother was busy tending to her duties at the Great Oak, he pestered the other druids for stories about elves, lessons in magic, the names of all the constellations, how to read tracks, and so on. Once he grew old enough, he paid for these lessons in herbs, gathering useful plants and mushrooms on the edge of the Wealdath.
As a young adult he trained as a ranger, helping the druids patrol the forest and keep the natural balance—a duty that grew increasingly difficult under the unjust rule of King Alemander. More and more he found himself at odds with the local baron's men—especially over their notorious elf hunts in the Wealdath. Though he managed for years to avoid open conflict, he was eventually forced to intervene when he spotted one such hunting party in close pursuit of a group of Elmanesse. Having become a murderer in the eyes of the law, he chose to leave Mosstone and spare his neighbors the baron's retribution.
For nine years he wandered Tethyr, scratching out a living by poaching, foraging, and selling his services as a forward scout for caravans that weren't bound north on the Trade Way. Shortly after the beginning of the Interregnum, he received the news that Mosstone's baron, Dinos Akhmelere, had vanished while fleeing Tethyr, leaving him free to finally return home. He leapt at the opportunity, rejoining his ranger brothers and sisters to defend Mosstone against monsters and claimants alike.
When the Longest Year came, he, like all others, lost his magic. His animal companion (a wolf named Irino whom he had trained for nearly a decade) wandered off into the Wealdath, never to return. Even when magic began its resurgence four years later, he never regained his ability to cast—though not for lack of trying.
In 1367 DR, the archdruid of Mosstone endorsed Zaranda Star as Queen of Tethyr. Trusting in his judgment and eager to see an end to the Interregnum, Abarran volunteered to join her Loyalist Army. Serving as a scout and military courier, he saw firsthand the lack of cohesion that broke the Loyalists at Myratma—something he still credits as the reason he holds the Red Knight in such high regard. When the second siege concluded in 1369, there was nothing left to keep him from home.
Yet in the ensuing years, he found that there was very little keeping him at home, either: his childhood friends had either died in the war or, being human, were nearing the ends of their lives; he no longer recognized most of the druids and rangers in Mosstone. When his mother passed away in 1371, he decided to depart for somewhere that needed him more, inspired by an Order of the Forest Heart paladin whom he had met several months prior.
Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately), his first stop in the Swordbelt provided him with exactly that.
