Abarran was born in Mosstone in 1310 DR, the son of a druid and an Elmanesse hunter who wandered away before his son's second birthday. As a result, he grew up with limited supervision. While his mother was busy tending to her duties at the Great Oak, he pestered the other druids for stories about elves (especially the Elmanesse), lessons in magic, the names of all the constellations, how to read tracks, and so on. Once he grew old enough, he paid for these lessons in herbs, gathering useful plants and mushrooms on the edge of the Wealdath.
As a young adult he trained as a ranger, helping the druids patrol the forest and keep the natural balance—a duty that grew increasingly difficult under the unjust rule of King Alemander. More and more he found himself at odds with the local baron (Dinos Akhmelere)'s men as they imposed on villagers and hunted elves in the Wealdath. Though he managed for years to avoid open conflict, he was eventually forced to violently intervene when he spotted one such party in close pursuit of a group of Elmanesse. Now a murderer in the eyes of the law, he chose to leave Mossgrove and spare his neighbors the baron's retribution.
For two years he wandered Tethyr, scratching out a living by poaching, foraging, and selling his sword-arm to any cause that didn't outright disgust him. When the Ten Black Days plunged the country into the Alemandrian Interregnum, demand for mercenaries rose sharply, and though he received news that Baron Dinos had vanished while fleeing north, he opted nevertheless to serve in the armies of whatever righteous claimants he could find (though these were few and far between, and most met unfortunate ends).
When the Longest Year came, Abarran, like all others, lost his magic. His animal companion, a wolf named Irino whom he had trained for nearly a decade, wandered off into the Wealdath, never to return. Heartbroken and diminished, he finally decided to return to Mosstone. Though magic began its slow resurgence four years later, he never regained the ability to cast.
In 1367 DR, the archdruid of Mosstone endorsed Zaranda Star as Queen of Tethyr. Trusting in the archdruid's judgment and eager to see an end to the Interregnum, Abarran enlisted in the Loyalist Army as a scout and courier. Serving at both Ithmong and Maratna, he saw firsthand the lack of cohesion that broke the Loyalist Army—something he still credits as the reason he holds the Red Knight in such high regard. When the long siege finally concluded in 1369, he stood down and returned home.
After his mother died of old age two years later, he chose again to leave Mosstone, feeling alienated from his druid and ranger comrades without his magic. With Tethyr no longer in need of saving, he traveled north up the Trade Way and into Amn, arriving in Murann in late Eleasis of 1371 DR.
