Hey all! New player here. Unsure if this is the best place to post this but did not find one better in the forums. I'm experienced in RPing but it's been quite awhile since I've done anything DnD-related and it's been even longer since I've played NWN. Looking for a little feedback and maybe some direction as I finalize my first PC on the server.
Looking to play a recent arrival to Murann from Tulmene. A 19 or so year old Half-Elf(tethyr+moon) who's magic has recently awoken after the Longest Year and seeks a place in the Muranni Alchemist's Guild to learn and grow. To keep it short(and get to the question) I'm envisioning him as having a family background in "fishing" with some underlying pirate-y vibes(a la Tulmene). Raised by his grandfather who was unusually skilled with a rapier for a "retired fisherman" who taught him the basics as a way of self defense(half-elf kid in a rural town). Inspired by the addition of the Swashbuckler class, and the history of Tulmene, I am thinking of incorporating that into my actual build by multi-classing 3 or 4 levels of SB as "the basics" for my RP, and for the feats mechanically, with the remaining levels being in Wizard.
Admittedly, I have very little experience in multi-classing in DnD as well as playing with a significantly lower level cap. I know it jives for the sake of my particular character story, but mechanically would I be gimping myself in any significant way? I've never been a min-maxxer and have always built characters I felt were "true" to themselves, but want to make sure I'm not simply wasting points for the sake of accuracy since the pool is smaller. My main angle aside from the RP being that while I don't plan on being a consistent melee participant, I enjoy the added survivability of a "Spellblade" as it functions in most games.
Assuming my thinking is correct, is there a particular way I should go about leveling? (All SB levels first? Alternate?) In order to abide by the RP and ensure I'm not RP'ing something not on my char sheet? (I'm thinking in the terms of his arrival in Murann. If I have no levels in Wizard, can I RP that my magic has awoken? Or vice versa with sword skills? Etc.)
If my thinking is NOT correct, any suggestions on where to steer instead? Pure Wizard and background be only RP? More "functional" multi class option?
Thanks in advance for any assistance or advice and I look forward to meeting soon!
