The Biography of an Unusual Elf Maiden
It’s been quite a few decades since Delia Di’mastine was born into a family of rather influential Moon Elven merchants. Her family, Di’mastine, resided in the Kingdom of Tethyr. More precisely, in the City of Darromar, or rather, in an estate close to the city. Despite the societal distrust towards their race, they had a good business there, and with good business comes influence. What kind of noble or rich city human would not want to be on good terms with merchants that deal in exotic goods, right?
That origin might explain some of Delia’s views on humans and elves, as well as the relations between the two races. She was never too attached to her kin in Wealdeth, as she never lived among the elves of the great forest. That young Moon Elf also prefers to stick around the cityfolk of Murann. However, it does not mean she does not have any similarities with other Moon Elves! She has a strong need for freedom and travel, as well as for meeting new people and learning about them.
Coming back to the origins of Delia, though. She grew up in her parents' estate. Her family never had any financial issues and always had enough coins to maintain a lifestyle at quite a high standard. Despite having rather good relations with their customers, the family still had some enemies and people who did not wish them well. They were mostly other merchants of Tethyr who did not like Elves getting into their market. Lower classes of Darromar also weren’t happy with Elves living a good life while they had to struggle for a better future.
Despite all of that, Delia’s upbringing was rather calm and without any great dangers to her life. She was taught by her family the art of haggling and diplomacy. The two skills so important in the life of a merchant. But it was not exactly how Delia wished to spend the rest of her life. She wasn’t fond of the idea of buying things at one place and then selling them at a higher price somewhere else. Even worse if she had to stay at home the entire time and order those things without going out for them to other regions! It was not something this moon elven youngling could accept. Her parents knew about that as well and did not oppose their daughter’s ambitions. Instead, they supported her in all the new areas of life she wished to explore. At first, the young elf wished to become a travelling bard, but quickly she learned that she had no gift for singing, poetry, or hands to play any kind of instrument.
Years quickly passed by while Delia studied the arts of diplomacy and of banter. However, in the meantime, she found something she was good at. Delia, despite her small size, was quite a good fencer. She quickly picked up the art of duelling people with a rapier. The long blade made only for stabbing became her weapon of choice right away. Thanks to the financial support from her family, the moon elven maiden could use the aid of experienced tutors, often known in the City of Darromar and in other regions of the Kingdom of Tethyr.
Delia kept on studying the arts of fencing together with her tutors, often visiting the loyal courts of minor nobility where she sharpened her diplomatic skills as well as her handling of the blade. However, despite all of that, Di’mastine had no idea what her future should look like. Was she supposed to become a fencing tutor one day or maybe a diplomat to the elves of Wealdeth, speaking in the name of Tethyrian nobility? She really had no career path in her head… Until one day.
At the age of 24, still in her youngling years in elven standards, the assassination of Errilam the First happened. The crime committed was blamed on the elves. Due to that, the Di’Mastine family had to leave the nation into exile to avoid revenge against something they had nothing to do with. Delia travelled with her family across Western Faerun. They never found a place where they could start a new life for good. The feelings of the old home were strong, not only within Delia but also within the rest of her family. Waterdeep was the only place where they resided for longer. This period of time lasted for a few decades, until the news of Queen Zaranda being crowned in Tethyr arrived. The newly crowned Queen put an end to the persecution of the elves. There was no hesitation within the Di’Mastine family. Everyone wished to come back home, even if it meant rebuilding everything from the ground up and dealing with a lack of societal acceptance from the people of Tethyr, who had persecuted elves for so long.
The Di’Mastine family came back to Darromar as soon as they could and offered their generational wealth to support the Queen and her efforts to rebuild what was destroyed. Delia herself, feeling quite patriotic, decided to support the Queen in different ways. She wished to offer her blade to her. However, joining the royal guard was not something she was capable of. Therefore, she looked for different ways of working in the name of the Queen. Delia joined the mercenaries, the Swords of Darromar. Who, despite being mercenaries, spread the influence of their beloved Queen Zaranda.
She was accepted despite the initial hesitation from the recruitment officer. Her preparations at the camp for the newly recruited did not last long, maybe a month at most. She already had a good martial base and was quite good at convincing her instructors to let her finish the preparatory course quicker. With the course finished, she was sent to Murann, where she was supposed to join the Swords of Darromar, who had a contract with the City of Murann. There she met her first friends, Hirag and Tilky, alongside the other Swords. Though they were not the only friends she made in the first weeks after her arrival. Delian, Sho and Fionn were among those who she had good relations, too. However, all three died, serving the people of Murann and Amn. Their faces and names stayed with Delia as a memory of what might happen one day to her, though she does not fear death, as long as it is a good one, in a good cause…
Delia’s career in the Swords is not a quick one, but it is promising nonetheless. She’s been serving the Swords of Darromar within Amn for two years by now. The Elven woman is waiting for her next promotion, with which she isn’t going to stop! Her ambitions are clear; she wants to become someone important and influential within the ranks of the Swords. For her own gain and for the tools which will allow her to help people, as well as showing the humans of Tethyr that elves can be patriotic as well.
