Urgan Gathra was born in the far north-eastern edges of Faerun to a grey orc tribe that called themselves the Broken Horns. He had an orcish mother, Yomog, and half-orcish father, Lukan.

However, Urgan was banished at a young age after concerns mounted in the tribe that too many half bloods would weaken future generations and make the Broken Horns unable to defend themselves from their opponents. Urgan was originally going to be executed, but Lukan begged for his banishment instead, and promised never again to mate.

Urgan then spent many years as a wandering nomad. Being only partly orc, while he wasn't welcome in most places, he wasn't immediately killed upon entering them either, and so occasionally sought shelter in human settlements, careful never to linger in any one for too long. He picked up elements of human cultures and language, yet never truly abandoned his wild, wandering nature.

One day, Urgan felt compelled to return to his tribe and prove to them that he was as strong as any orc, and worthy of rejoining the Broken Horns and being reunited with his parents. Yet when he arrived, the orcs told him his father had gone on a journey to seek a great death, and that Urgan was still too weak besides. Urgan now has a new mission: to retrace the steps of his father and find out what happened to him, and to become strong enough to finally be acknowledged by his Orcish peers.
