Zurgug Ur was born in a small mining settlement nestled within the mountains that separate the civilized lands from the wilderness beyond. The village itself was little more than a collection of stone buildings, workshops, and mine shafts carved into the mountainside, populated by miners, smiths, caravan guards, and laborers who cared little for bloodlines so long as a person earned their keep.

His father, Urgash Ur, was a respected blacksmith whose work supplied tools, armor, and weapons to both the settlement and the caravans that passed through the region. His mother worked alongside the miners, and together they raised a large family of five sons and one daughter. Though Zurgug's mixed blood often drew curious glances from travelers, within the settlement he was judged by the strength of his back and the quality of his labor rather than his appearance.

From the day he could hold a pickaxe, Zurgug worked the mines alongside his brothers. Ore drawn from the mountain fed the forges, and nearly every member of the settlement learned some aspect of smithing, mining, or metalworking. The people of the settlement took pride in their labor, believing that every weapon forged and every tunnel carved from the mountain represented the strength of the community itself.

Life within the settlement was strict. Families were expected to contribute, traditions were closely observed, and duty to one's kin was considered sacred. Among the Ur family, it was customary that any child wishing to leave home permanently first prove that they possessed the strength to survive without the protection of their family. Such contests were conducted through ritual bouts of combat between family members, beginning with the youngest and ending with the head of the household.

As he grew older, Zurgug found himself increasingly at odds with the expectations placed upon him. He desired to see the wider world beyond the mountains and live according to his own path rather than remain tied to the mines and forge for the rest of his life. Though his family opposed his decision, tradition demanded that they honor his challenge.

One by one he defeated his siblings and, eventually, his mother. The final bout was against his father, a man he had spent his entire life trying to emulate. The contest was fierce, and in the heat of the struggle Zurgug struck a blow far harder than he intended. His father fell and never rose again.

Though no blame was placed upon him according to the customs of his family, the loss forever changed the household. Unable to remain and burdened by the memory of his father's death, Zurgug gathered his belongings and departed the settlement.

Since then he has earned his living through honest labor, guard work, and the strength of his sword. Though the mountains of his youth lie far behind him, the lessons learned beneath their shadow remain with him still.
